The Firefly History
In 1975, our founder John Drury moved his family to Jim Thorpe and renovated the old American Hotel to what is now The Inn at Jim Thorpe. This act brought business back to downtown and began the revitalization of Broadway. Always a visionary, he sponsored an American artist for a residency with the local school district where all the public school, CCTI, home school, and the old St. Joseph’s Academy students visited the Museum to experience the artist’s work. The artist won 1st place in the prestigious United Nations International Arts Competition and was recognized by Global Citizen, along with John Lennon, as an artist who spreads messages of peace around the world. This residency gave birth to the outreach programming of the Museum that includes a planetarium experience, school residencies, artist convergences, visits to prisons, hospitals, recovery centers, health conferences and more to teach art therapy through a unique story of fireflies, part of which was written and painted at the Museum.
